What affiliate marketing means
Affiliate marketing is a commercial arrangement in which a publisher, creator or media buyer refers an audience to a product or service and may receive a commission for a qualifying result. The result is defined by the campaign: a purchase, an eligible enquiry, a confirmed registration or another agreed action. A visit alone is not necessarily a payable result.
The word affiliate describes the commercial relationship, not a single traffic channel. A comparison website and a paid-search specialist can both be affiliates, but their audiences, costs and campaign permissions may differ substantially.
Who does what
An advertiser supplies the underlying product or service and defines the outcome it wants. An affiliate supplies promotion and audience access. A network provides an operating layer that may include account review, campaign access, links, attribution, reporting and commission administration. A consumer makes the choice to engage with the advertised offer.
Some campaigns involve another network or provider between these participants. That does not automatically give an affiliate access to the upstream account or ownership of the advertiser relationship. In ClicksBounty, affiliates work through their approved ClicksBounty account and the requirements presented for their participation.
From a referral to a commission
Consider a publisher explaining how to compare a service. A reader follows an authorised campaign link and submits an enquiry at the destination. If the enquiry meets the campaign criteria and is correctly attributed, it may result in a commission. If the user is outside the accepted geography or the action does not qualify, a recorded visit or submission does not establish payment eligibility.
- Select a campaign you are approved to promote.
- Check its conversion definition, audience, traffic rules and creative requirements.
- Use the authorised tracking method and truthful promotional content.
- Review attributed activity and conversion status in reporting.
- Reconcile approved eligible commissions against the applicable payment rules.
The economics to understand
An affiliate’s revenue is its applicable commission, not necessarily the full amount an advertiser pays a network. The affiliate also bears the costs of producing or buying traffic. Comparing campaign payouts without considering qualifying conversion rate, reversals and acquisition costs can give a misleading impression of profitability.
For an illustrative calculation, suppose eligible commissions total 60 units of currency and promotion costs 45 units. The difference is 15 before other expenses and taxes. These are hypothetical numbers explaining arithmetic, not ClicksBounty results or an earnings forecast. Pending commissions should not be treated as settled revenue.
Choosing a campaign responsibly
Start with the audience’s need and the offer’s actual conditions. Read the destination, eligibility criteria and conversion requirement before choosing a channel. A higher stated payout is not useful if your audience cannot qualify or your promotion method is prohibited.
Keep a record of the requirements that applied when you launched. If a rule changes, stop or adjust affected promotion as instructed. Ask for clarification before spending money when brand terms, incentives, email or direct linking are uncertain. General descriptions of network capabilities are not campaign approval.
Common mistakes
Good attribution cannot rescue an unsuitable or misleading promotion. Disclose relevant commercial relationships where required, substantiate claims and allow people to make an informed choice. Campaign approval does not replace privacy or advertising obligations.
- Treating every tracked event as approved and payable.
- Assuming all campaigns accept the same countries and traffic methods.
- Publishing unapproved product claims or disguising an advertisement as an independent review.
- Using someone else’s tracking link or altering identifiers.
- Selecting a campaign solely by its headline payout.
Preparing to apply
A useful application explains the properties you control, your experience, how you acquire traffic and how you intend to promote campaigns. Be specific about methods rather than promising volumes you cannot support. ClicksBounty reviews applications and may ask for clarification or verification; submitting one does not guarantee approval.
Before applying, understand the difference between the campaign’s qualifying action, its attribution method and the rules that make a commission payable. The related guides cover each of those decisions in more detail.
